Urban Upgradation Strategy North

The northern part of Delhi is one of the most interesting and in portions, most imageable zones of the city, though somewhat cut-off from the general perception of citizens at large. It consists of, or abuts, all the significant historical layers of the city of Delhi-starting from the dense medieval walled city, the colonial city, to the post colonial and the present global city.

The present proposal suggests urban design and landscape interventions to create a.. more
wholesome, organized and imageable environment for this zone, addressing its potential to provide city level and local level civic spaces, activities and public amenities. In correspondence with the Master Plan for Delhi 2021 (Draft), the zones C (Civil Lines) and D (North West Delhi -1) have been taken up for the purpose of the present proposal. Substantial urban extensions as per the master plan of Delhi are proposed in the north western direction of the city.

What with this, north delhi is going to occupy a more and more central location with respect to overall urban formation. It therefore indeed warrants closer scrutiny to determine opportunities to improve the quality of civic life.

The north Delhi area also contains the Vidhan Sabha, the seat of governance for the state of Delhi. A number of significant heritage structures (e.g The old city wall, Kashmeri gate, The Vidhan Sabha or the Old secretariat, the Old stock exchange, The Raushanara palace, the Raushanara club, the Old Barafkhana, old mills) as well as a number of historic gardens (e.g Qudsia Bagh and Raushanara bag h) dot the landscape of the area, rendering it with great potential to be developed as city level public spaces, recreation areas, as well as re-establish relationships with the old city.
